They have changed the UI (User Interface) back to the horrible one! Sure, it’s not the end of the world, but it’s avoidable is it not?

How Windows 98 can you make Twitter 2012?

Excuse me…(ahem)…

“ARRRRGGGHHHHH”

In the last 15 minutes I have seen the background change between what I would call; “Default-Palette-Blue”, and “Default-Palette-Red.”

A big shout out to @Imogen_willyxox for empathising with my rant!

For Twitters’ sake, I hope this interface is some sort of default maintenance screen that viewers see when designers are playing around behind the scenes. Surely, this is not the new ‘face’ of Twitter?

*End Rant*

Leave your comments below. Thanks guys!

Print a design brief

Too many times have I heard of people hiring expensive graphic designers who seem unmotivated, and who supply sub-standard jobs.

But just as worse, is the amount of times that I have heard of clients that either; don’t really know what they want, or who are unprepared to see a designer.

So, hopefully this post will guide you in your future meetings with a designer. An important thing to remember is that your project will most likely be completed no-matter-what, yet, if you follow the guidelines set out on this page, you are a lot (and I mean “a lot”) more likely to be happy with the final deliverables. Not just that, but you will have made the journey from the start to the finish of the project in a better, less stressed, frame-of-mind.

So, let’s get down to business. It all comes down to a few tasks and equations. Let’s start with the tasks:

A design brief is a document which simply outlines the aims, objectives, milestones, and timeline of a project.

This is of great benefit to both the client and the designer. A clear and descriptive brief is absolutely critical in the design process. It will help generate understanding between both parties right from the ‘get-go’.

From the client’s point-of-view, you are showing a designer that you are serious about your project. Sub-consciously telling the designer that you are looking for high quality deliverables, and asserting that they shouldn’t waste your time.

Make it personal and print the name of the designer on the Brief

This simple step will do you wonders. The designer will see that you are organised, and will not accept inefficiency.

Include a brief description of your company at the top of the Brief

Do not assume that the designer will know anything about the sector that you work in, especially the role of your company in that particular sector. I personally, as a designer, have worked in the travel, recruitment, trade, religious, and logistics sectors. It would be asking a lot for me to know about all of these.

Write in dot form:

1. What your organisation does
2. How long you have been established and how many staff you employ
3. What your niche market is
4. How you fit in to your industry sector

Use your letterhead

This affirms the designer that they are working for a company, not for an individual. This transfers an amount of responsibility to the designer and will assure that the designer is placed in a corporate (serious) setting. It will help you transfer a feeling of imporantace and urgency in regards to your project.

Set out your aims

Why do you need your project to be completed? Do you want to train employees, improve your corporate identity, gain subscribes, or raise awareness (etc.) ?

Make your aims as clear as possible and encourage the designer to ask questions in regards to the aims that are set out in the document.

The Brief in an interview setting

Questions by the designer

If you land on a designer that is composed, and asks questions about the brief, you are on track. A designer that asks questions is not a stupid designer, quite the oppostie. By asking questions, a designer is forming a personal and intellectual model in his/her head regarding the project.

Project Constraints

As a designer, I generally try and look for problems in the structure of brief, and try to pull out the constraints before I run into them mid-project. This will save time and money in the long run. These include constraints like; time, software, personnel, etc. A good designer should be able to locate and explain constraints willingly to a client. These generally come in the form of comments such as:

Would it be more effective to do this…?

How is this part of the brief possible?

Would it be faster to…?

==================

MORE COMING SOON…

During Melbourne’s New Years Fireworks show, something amazing happened. Well, nearly. (It didn’t quite burn all the way to the ground)

The Melbourne Arts Centre Spire.

Oh what a shame it didn’t come down in a fiery melted mess. This structure frustrates my life. It is a “Melbourne Icon,” but says nothing about the city of Melbourne. There is nothing uniquely Australian about it. (Then again, that goes for a lot of Melbourne based design such as Federation Square.) There is just something about it. Sometimes, design doesn’t have to be uniquely Australian to be appreciated. I’m not saying that at all.

Take the International Style for example. Nothing excites me more than some great Modern design that looks like something out of the Bauhaus. But this structure, just…….yes. You get the idea.

The Arts Centre spire actually reminds me of the Eiffel Tower in Paris.

That, and a burnt and hollowed out, rusty NASA rocket.

I personally don’t think it is good design for something to remind you of somewhere that you are not, but maybe that’s just me.
